Want to write emails, posts, or messages that people actually read and act on?

Here are 3 writing rules that can make everything from a sales pitch to a Slack message more impactful.

Ruthlessly eliminate every unnecessary word

If a word doesn’t add value, it subtracts clarity.

  • Before: “I just wanted to quickly follow up with you to see if you had any thoughts on the proposal I sent over.”

  • After: “Any thoughts on the proposal?”

9 words instead of 22. Nothing lost. Everything gained.

Put your power in verbs, not adjectives.

Adjectives try to convince. Verbs enliven.

  • Instead of: “We’re excited to offer a groundbreaking, innovative product…”

  • Try: “Our product cuts onboarding time in half and eliminates 12 manual steps.”

Write to their DiSC style, not yours.

People read with different filters.

Think about what they need:

  • D Style (Dominant): Be brief. Bottom line up front.

“Project's behind. Need your decision today.”

  • i Style (Influence): Be warm, energetic, conversational.

“Hey! Super excited about your ideas—can we riff for 15 mins this week?”

  • S Style (Steady): Be clear, kind, structured.

“No rush—just checking in. Let me know if you need more info to move forward.”

  • C Style (Conscientious): Be logical, detailed, respectful of their time.

“Attached is the report (w/ sources). Let me know if any data needs verification.”

Understanding their style makes your writing land better, faster.

And don’t tell me this takes too much time. Just give these instructions to AI and let it do the heavy lifting.
